Guar gum resists breakdown in the stomach and small intestine, but colonic bacteria selectively ferment it once it reaches the colon. That single property does two different jobs depending on how a formulation uses it: as a soluble fiber, that selective fermentation is the basis for prebiotic claims, since it's what feeds beneficial gut bacteria.
