Pet Food Grade (GG-PET) is developed specifically for dry and wet pet food manufacturers. Pet food formulation has a dynamic that doesn't apply to almost any other food category: the purchaser and the consumer are two different parties, judging the product on entirely different terms. The pet owner judges a product by sight — gravy consistency, how evenly chunks are distributed, whether it looks appetizing in the bowl — while the pet judges it by smell, texture, and taste, with no interest in visual presentation at all. Formulation Guidance
For canned and pouched formats, add guar gum to the gravy or sauce base before retort processing, ensuring full hydration ahead of the thermal sterilization cycle. Confirm final gravy viscosity after the complete retort cycle rather than on the pre-retort mix — the heat exposure during sterilization is what determines the texture that actually reaches the shelf.
For dry kibble, add guar gum to the dry pre-mix before it enters the extruder, for even distribution through the high-shear, high-heat extrusion process — this supports structural binding, which is a different function from adding it post-extrusion as part of a surface coating.
If kibble is coated with a sprayed palatant or fat after extrusion, test coating adhesion and retention specifically — surface porosity, which is influenced by binder choice and extrusion conditions, affects how well a coating adheres, and that's worth confirming through simulated shipping and handling vibration rather than immediately after coating application alone.
Dosage is worth tuning per format rather than using one setting across a product line: a thin, pourable gravy needs less guar gum than a pâté or loaf format that depends on more body and structure to hold its shape.
